Integers
We are going to begin by looking at unsigned integers. An integer is a whole number, and an unsigned integer is positive (i.e., it cannot be negative and must be zero or greater).
The decimal numbers we use in everyday life are represented in the positional notation; that is, the value or weighting of each digit in the number is determined by its position. The value of the 6 in 1261 is ten times as great as the 6 in 126. The decimal number 1261 is equal to 1 x 103 + 2 x 102 + 6 x 101 + 1 x 100 (note that the value of x0 is 1 for any value of x). In the positional notation, the value by which a digit is multiplied when it moves one place left in a number, is called the base.
